SouthStar Landing Zone Description Example:

SS: SouthSTAR
LZ: Landing Zone

SS: “Anytown LZ from SouthSTAR, we are apx. 2 mins. out, can you provide a description of the landing zone?”

LZ: “SouthSTAR, your LZ is set up apx. 2 miles west of the accident scene in a large athletic field. You’ll be landing on a grassy surface apx. 300’ X 300’. There is a treeline to the North, telephone poles and wires bordering the roadway to the West, a two story high school to the South and a treeline to the East. There is an unlit cell phone tower apx. ¼ mile farther out to the West. Your LZ is marked off with 4 flares and personnel have secured the area. We’ll secure all white lights once you’re overhead”.

The flight team will then respond with any additional questions or concerns. The team will also request you acknowledge the position of the aircraft once it is in sight, using the “clock method” (with the nose of the aircraft serving as 12 o’clock)

LZ: “SouthSTAR, we have you in sight, the LZ is off to your 3 o’clock position”

All communications will cease when the aircraft makes it’s final approach UNLESS IT IS URGENT TO THE AIRCRAFT LANDING SAFELY. Our team will also cease communications in the aircraft and every team member will be looking out for problems / obstructions. This is known as a “sterile cockpit” and is a FAA regulation. Communications will again commence once the aircraft is safely on the ground.
