SouthStar Landing Zone Brief
This brief sample is for descriptive purposes only.
Approximately two to three minutes out of the LZ, a pilot will communicate with the ground contact on the assigned frequency and request a description of the landing zone. Described below are the items of importance that the flight team will need to be made aware of.
Location of LZ in reference to scene / landmarks (West of the accident scene)
Type of area / surface selected for the landing zone (soccer field, parking lot)
The LZ size (Greater than 100’ X 100’)
Larger for multi aircraft incidents (100’ x 100’ per aircraft)
AREA HAZARDS / OBSTRUCTIONS – MOST IMPORTANT!!!
Wires, towers, high tension lines, cell towers, fences, buildings, light poles, stanchions, etc.
ANY vertical protrusion from the ground in the area of the intended LZ.
Start by describing the area immediately bordering the LZ at a specific point and proceed clockwise
“To the North there will be….”
“To the East there will be…”
“To the South there will be…”
“To the West there will be…”
Describe obstructions / hazards / potential hazards in area
Confirm that the area has been made SECURE
Personnel assigned to ALL access points and deny entry.
Personnel, bystanders, vehicles (including emergency vehicles)
Confirm that the LZ is marked off with 4 FLARES/Cones, One at each corner
Confirm that ALL white lights will be secured when the aircraft is overhead
